A small-space growing companion
Your first herb.
A little closer to dinner.
A windowsill or a balcony is a place to begin. Let’s find an herb for the light and room you actually have.
Find your starting point
Choose your light. Start with one pot.First, check your light.
See next step ↓Check the plant’s label for pot size. Check roots & drainage.
Let your conditions lead
First, check your light.
Watch when a direct sunbeam reaches the place your pot will sit, then choose the closest time above.
Get to know your light →How we choose these options
Light gives you a starting shortlist: a sunny window with at least five hours of direct sun indoors, or around six hours outdoors for sun-loving herbs. Mint, parsley, cilantro, and lemon balm are also options for partial shade outdoors. Try one pot first and watch how it grows; hours alone do not guarantee success.
Space changes the pot-shopping advice, not which herbs appear. Check the variety’s label, rootball, and mature size before buying. Dill is listed for balconies in this guide. Local temperature, winter light, and wind still matter. Read the references.
