Sill & Sprig

A first pot, thoughtfully grown

A practical starting guide to choosing, growing, and harvesting culinary herbs in a small space.

What this site helps you do

Sill & Sprig helps US apartment beginners choose a culinary herb, set up one pot, observe its care needs, and take a modest first harvest. It includes twelve herb profiles, five action guides, a conditions matcher, and a browser-local plant journal. The selection is curated, not a ranking or a claim that these plants thrive in every apartment.

Practical advice with a source

Our guides draw on public university Extension resources from Clemson, Maryland, and Illinois, consulted November 6–8, 2026. We turn their advice into a starting routine: choose a suitable spot, set up one pot, observe moisture and growth, and harvest a little for the kitchen. Source links are included so you can read further.

Use it as a starting guide

The finder suggests herbs by natural light and indoor or outdoor location. Space choices prompt pot-shopping advice; they do not guarantee that a particular pot size will suit every variety. Follow the cultivar label for growing room, and use healthy new growth to judge harvest readiness. Illustrations explain ideas and are not tools for identifying unknown plants.

Local conditions come first

US frost dates, summer heat, humidity, and balcony wind vary widely. No national sowing month is supplied. Check your local Extension office and cultivar label before making seasonal decisions. This guide does not diagnose disease or identify unknown plants for eating. French tarragon is outside this edition; sweet marjoram is included instead.
